DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION:

 

Supervisor Monica Brown requests that the Board adopt a resolution recognizing and honoring Cesar Chavez for his contributions to farm labor in the United States.

 

SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:

 

Cesar Chavez is a nationally recognized figure whose birthday is celebrated on March 31st in various states across America. Cesar Chavez worked tirelessly on behalf of farm worker’s rights and founded the United Farm Workers Union.

 

The United Farm Workers Union has been instrumental in establishing collective bargaining agreements between farm workers and growers in America and has won contracts requiring basic labor rights. The United Farm Workers Union continues to lead and organize crucial campaigns to assist farm workers in achieving fair working conditions.

 

FINANCIAL IMPACT:

 

There is no cost to the County with regard to the adoption of this resolution.

 

ALTERNATIVES:

 

The Board could choose not to adopt this resolution; however, this is not recommended as it is an opportunity to recognize the significant achievements of Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers Union.

 

OTHER AGENCY INVOLVEMENT:

 

No other agencies are involved in this resolution.
