DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION:

Supervisor Vasquez requests the Board of Supervisors to adopt and present a resolution recognizing the month of May 2024 as Asian-American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in Solano County.

SUMMARY / DISCUSSION:

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, a time in which we celebrate the achievements and contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the United States. The month of May was chosen to commemorate the arrival of the first known Japanese immigrants to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. Most of the workers on the railroad were Chinese immigrants.

Asian American and Pacific Islanders are a large part of Solano County’s rich history, dating back to the Gold Rush era in California. Many Asian immigrants came to the Solano area to work in agriculture, settling in Vacaville, Dixon and Suisun Valley according to news reports. The contributions of those early families who settled in Solano County still carry on to this day. Solano County is also home to numerous Asian American and Pacific Islander cultural and business groups.

FINANCIAL IMPACT:

The costs associated with preparing the agenda item are nominal and absorbed by the department’s FY2023/24 Working Budget. The costs associated with the preparation and purchase of the resolution materials are included in the Board’s FY2023/24 Working Budget.
