DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION:
The University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE) recommends that the Board of Supervisors receive a presentation from Karen Warburton, Area Director of UCCE Capitol Corridor, providing an overview of current programs, services, and activities serving Solano County in 2026.
SUMMARY / DISCUSSION:
Karen Warburton, Area Director of the UCCE, Capitol Corridor, will provide the Board of Supervisors with an overview of UCCE programs, services, and activities serving Solano County in 2026.
UCCE provides research-based education, technical assistance, and community programs that support local agriculture, natural resource management, youth development, and community education. The presentation will introduce UCCE's local team, including two new advisors who joined the organization in 2026, one of whom is based in the Solano County office.
The presentation will highlight ongoing programs supporting field and vegetable crops, Delta agriculture, orchards, vineyards, dairy and livestock production, and small-scale farming. Additional areas of focus include climate-smart agriculture, local food systems, pest management, urban landscapes, and human-wildlife interactions. These programs provide valuable resources and technical expertise to help agricultural producers and residents address local challenges and opportunities.
The presentation will also feature UCCE's volunteer-supported community education programs, including 4-H Youth Development, UC Master Gardeners, and UC Master Food Preservers. The update will conclude with an overview of volunteer participation, service hours, and community outreach efforts, highlighting the reach and contributions of UCCE programs throughout Solano County.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
The costs associated with preparing and presenting this informational item are nominal and have been absorbed within UCCE's FY2026/27 Working Budget. There is no additional financial impact to the County General Fund associated with receiving the presentation.
ALTERNATIVES:
The Board could choose not to receive the presentation; however, this alternative is not recommended, as the presentation provides an opportunity for the Board to receive an update on UCCE's current programs, services, and activities benefiting Solano County residents and the local agricultural community.
OTHER AGENCY INVOLVEMENT:
None.
