DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION:
The Department of Health and Social Services recommends that the Board of Supervisors adopt and present a resolution recognizing May 6 - 12, 2025 as National Nurses Week in Solano County.
SUMMARY:
The Department of Health and Social Services (H&SS), Public Health Division, joins the American Nurses Association, hospitals, and many other healthcare agencies and organizations in recognizing National Nurses Week, which is traditionally celebrated May 6th through May 12th each year. This is an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the efforts of dedicated nurses in the performance of their duties throughout Solano County.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
The costs associated with activities in recognition of public observances are included in the Department’s FY2024/25 Working Budget. The costs associated with preparation and purchase of the resolution materials are included in the Board’s FY2024/25 Working Budget. There is no additional impact to the County General Fund.
DISCUSSION:
National Nurses Week is celebrated annually between May 6th, National Nurses Day, and May 12th, the birthday of celebrated nurse Florence Nightingale. National Nurses Week celebrates the importance of nurses and their contributions to the health of individuals, families, communities and populations they serve.
The 2025 international theme for National Nurses Week is “Caring for Nurses Strengthens Economies.” The 2025 theme highlights the importance of supporting the physical and mental health of nurses and highlights how a healthy and secure nursing workforce is crucial to the overall functioning of healthcare.
Over five million nurses comprise the largest group of professionals in the healthcare sector in the United States. Health and Social Services (H&SS) currently has 49 individuals (includes regular full-time and extra-help positions) that serve in various nursing roles and in a variety of program areas and settings including Family Health Services, Behavioral Health, Child Welfare Services, Foster Care, Older and Disabled Adult Services, and several Public Health programs including Communicable Disease and Tuberculosis Control, Nurse-Family Partnership, IMPACT Nursing, Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention, California Children’s Services, and Child Health and Disability Prevention. Additionally, ten nurse practitioners are employed by H&SS.
In recognition of National Nurses Week, healthcare stakeholders and community partners are encouraged to consider ways to celebrate nurses and thank them for their steadfast commitment to meeting the needs of patients and their communities every day. During the month of May, Solano County Human Resources will feature nursing job classifications on Facebook and Public Health nursing leadership will recognize the difference Solano County nurses make with social media posts and daily expressions of appreciation throughout National Nurses Week. On May 13, 2025, Public Health Nursing will partner with the local blood bank, Vitalant, to host a blood drive at 275 Beck Avenue in Fairfield.
ALTERNATIVES:
The Board of Supervisors may choose not to adopt and present this resolution. This is not recommended as it is an opportunity to honor and recognize Solano County nurses for their value, dedication, and commitment.
OTHER AGENCY INVOLVEMENT:
H&SS worked with Human Resources and Vitalant to coordinate activities for Solano County nurses.
