DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION:

Supervisor Williams recommends that the Board of Supervisors adopt a resolution recognizing June 12, 2025, as Women Veterans Recognition Day in Solano County to honor the invaluable contributions and achievements of women veterans and servicewomen, and express gratitude for their selfless dedication to duty.

SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:

Although not yet recognized as a national holiday, Women Veterans Recognition Day is observed by many states and organizations through legislation and official proclamations. This day honors the courage, dedication, and invaluable contributions of women who have served in the United States Armed Forces throughout our nation's history.

Since the founding of the United States, women have proudly and bravely served in defense of our freedoms. Their talents and commitment have been vital to our military's success-from early roles in support and nursing to their current presence across every branch and military occupational specialty. Today, women serve in all capacities, including logistics, intelligence, munitions, and combat roles. Their service strengthens the most professional, educated, agile, and capable military force the U.S. has ever known.

Women Veterans Recognition Day traces its origins to June 12, 1948, with the signing of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act. Prior to this legislation, women could only serve as nurses in the regular and reserve forces during peacetime. The Act formally recognized women as essential to the military, allowing them to serve as permanent, regular members of the armed forces.

Importantly, this milestone also coincided with the desegregation of the military, paving the way for African American women to serve officially. Notably, units such as the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion-known as the "Six Triple Eight"-made historic contributions during World War II, exemplifying the leadership and determination of women in uniform.

Women Veterans Recognition Day serves as a powerful reminder of the progress made-and the ongoing commitment-to honoring the service and sacrifice of all women veterans.
