DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION:
Supervisor Cassandra James recommends the Board approve the appointment of Deborah Dickson to the Solano County Fair Board, representing District 1, to fill an unexpired term through July 31, 2028.
SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:
Deborah Dickson is exceptionally well qualified to serve on the Solano County Fair Board. A lifelong Solano County resident, she has consistently demonstrated her commitment to the community through extensive volunteer work and service on multiple local boards. Ms. Dickson has a long-standing record of advocating for, organizing, and promoting family-friendly and culturally enriching activities for residents across the county.
Ms. Dickson played a pivotal role in organizing one of Solano County’s earliest Juneteenth festivals, helping to establish a tradition that continues to grow in significance. Her leadership and dedication earned her the Silver Legacy Award from the Juneteenth Celebration Committee in 2013, as well as a Proclamation from the City of Vallejo for her work on the 2002 Juneteenth Celebration.
In addition, Ms. Dickson co-chaired a 1-Day Playground Build with KABOOM for the Omega Boys & Girls Club in 2007. She also served as the host of the popular community talk show Our Voices on Vallejo Community Access TV Channel 27 for more than eight years, where she interviewed local leaders, community members, and entertainers, including the group ConFunkShun, and provided a platform for important local conversations.
Ms. Dickson has been serving as the District 3 representative since June 27, 2023. Ms. Dickson relocated and is now a resident of District 1. As a result, she is no longer eligible to serve as the District 3 representative. In order to continue her service on the Board, Supervisor James requests Ms. Dickson be appointed as the District 1 representative.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
The costs associated with preparing the agenda item are nominal and absorbed by the District 1 FY2025/26 Working Budget.
ALTERNATIVES:
The Board could decide not to appoint Deborah Dickson to the Solano County Fair Board. This is not recommended as she is qualified; has served the community through many years and has a desire to serve in this capacity.
