DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION:
The Department of Resource Management recommends that the Board of Supervisors adopt and present a resolution and plaque of appreciation honoring Greg Meeks, Engineering Technician, Senior, upon his retirement from the Department of Resource Management with over 29 years of dedicated public service to Solano County.
SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:
Mr. Meeks will be retiring on July 6, 2024 as an engineering technician, senior with the Department of Resource Management after 29 years of excellent service to Solano County and its residents. Greg’s career started in 1980 when he served two years in the US Army, learning valuable skills in telecommunications before being honorably discharged. He then worked two years at Hines Wholesale Nursery in Lagoon Valley as a service mechanic while simultaneously going to Solano Community College where he earned an Associate of Science degree. Greg began working at Mare Island Naval Shipyard in 1987 as a shipwright apprentice and was promoted to journeyman shipwright mechanic after four years.
In 1995, Mr. Meeks was hired by Solano County as an engineering technician (entry) in the Department of Transportation to work in the survey unit. In 1998, Greg was promoted to engineering technician (journey) and worked as an inspector in the construction unit on roads, bridges and drainage facilities. Due to his dedication and field experience, Mr. Meeks was again promoted in 2002 to engineering technician, senior where he became a lead inspector on several large projects, including lead inspector on the Morrison Lane Bridge Replacement Project.
Due to his technical knowledge of construction materials and ability to address difficult issues quickly, Greg was appointed lead technician for encroachment permits, which has remained one of his primary duties. Greg enhanced his skills and abilities to include laboratory testing of soils and concrete, nuclear density testing for soil compaction, field surveying, boundary calculations, drafting, and plan review. He continued his engineering education and training by taking many classes and obtaining various inspection and testing certifications.
In his over 29 years of service to the County, Mr. Meeks has remained a cornerstone member of the Public Works Engineering Division and is recognized for his exceptional dedication to holding work in the public right of way to the highest standard. Greg is also credited for his extensive dedication to public service, focused resolve, and gentle demeanor. We wish him all the best in his retirement from County service and with his new adventures in this next chapter of his life.
