DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION:

The Department of Health and Social Services (H&SS) recommends that the Board adopt and present a resolution declaring April 1-7, 2013 as Public Health Week in Solano County.

SUMMARY:

For more than a decade, communities around the country have celebrated National Public Health Week (NPHW) each April by highlighting public health achievements and raising awareness of issues important to improving the public's health. This year, the theme is "Public Health is Return on Investment (ROI): Save Lives, Save Money".

FINANCIAL IMPACT:

The staff time associated with the preparation of this item is budgeted within the Department's 2012/13 Adopted budget.

DISCUSSION:

Each year, the American Public Health Association (APHA), selects a different issue around which to rally together and focus on efforts to protect the nation's health.  This year's theme is "Public Health is ROI: Save Lives, Save Money".  NPHW will help educate families, communities and public officials about the importance of public health and its return on investment - that is the investment of resources into public health can be measured in lives saved, diseases and injuries mitigated or prevented, and cost avoided.

Solano Public Health has several events planned during this week, including:

Child Safety Seat Demonstration: Thursday, April 4, 2013 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM at Health & Social Services Department Building, Back Parking Lot, 355 Tuolumne, Vallejo

Drop off Expired or Unused Medications: Saturday, April 27, 2013 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at:

•  Solano County Sheriff Coroner's Office, 520 Clay St., Fairfield, 784-7500

•  Benicia Police Department, 200 East L St., Benicia, 746-4268

•  Dixon Police Department, 201 West A St., Dixon, 678-7070

Solano Public Health Annual Staff Meeting will be held April 25, 2013, and the 2013 Edward G. Lopez Award winner will be recognized.

Rapid Oral HIV Antibody Testing: April 3 and 17 from 5 -7 PM at 2201 Courage Dr., Fairfield, and April 11 and 25 from 5 - 7 PM at 365 Tuolumne St., Vallejo.

Solano Emergency Medical Services Cooperative: April 11, 2013 from 9 - 11 AM at Suisun City County Chambers.

In addition to these events, public health staff will be conducting outreach to local media outlets to increase awareness about the importance of creating environments that promote healthy lifestyles and healthy choices; distributing Be Healthy coloring books to children in WIC clinics, health and dental clinics, and county libraries; and provide daily e-mails to Health & Social Services employees with ideas to help draw attention to things we can do within our community and neighborhoods to create a healthier America.

ALTERNATIVES:

The Board may choose not to adopt this resolution.  This is not recommended because this is an opportunity to recognize public health achievements and raise awareness of issues important to improving the public's health.

OTHER AGENCY INVOLVEMENT:

The Department will be working with several agencies to promote Public Health Week including the American Public Health Association, Solano County Department of Resource Management, Local Schools, Health Care Providers, and Community Clinics.
