DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION:
The Department of Resource Management recommends that the Board adopt a resolution proclaiming the week of May 17-23, 2026, as the 66th annual National Public Works Week in Solano County to recognize and highlight the ideals embodied in this year’s theme, “Rooted in Service, Powered by Community,” and to honor the dedication of public works professionals serving Solano County residents.
SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:
National Public Works Week is observed each year during the third full week of May. Recognizing National Public Works Week acknowledges the hundreds of thousands of men and women across the country who provide and maintain public works infrastructure and services. Established in 1960 as a public education campaign, National Public Works Week calls attention to the importance of public works in community life. Public Works professionals serve the public every day with quiet dedication, and their contributions often go unnoticed. The recommended resolution honors the commitment of these professionals.
The week of May 17-23, 2026 marks the 66th Annual National Public Works Week, sponsored by the American Public Works Association. This year’s theme, “Rooted in Service, Powered by Community,” recognizes the foundational role public works professionals play in supporting strong, resilient communities. Rooted in Service reflects the long-standing dedication of public works personnel to protecting public health, safety and welfare. In Solano County, Public Works personnel design, construct, operate and maintain vital infrastructure that connects our cities, rural communities, businesses and the broader region. Their work supports transportation, emergency response, flood protection and essential public services that residents rely on daily.
Powered by Community highlights the partnerships, trust, and shared purpose that strengthen the services Public Works delivers every day. Cooperation, communication and community stewardship are integral to the success of public works programs. From responsible use of public infrastructure and public engagement to partnerships with contractors, engineers, service providers and other agencies, Public Works is strengthened through shared responsibility and coordinated effort. Contracting partnerships provide specialized expertise and support efficient project delivery, while collaboration during emergencies such as fires, floods and earthquakes supports timely response, debris removal, landslide mitigation and protection of critical infrastructure. Together, these combined efforts promote public safety, economic vitality and quality of life throughout Solano County.
Through their service and strong community partnerships, Solano County Public Works professionals help sustain economic vitality, protect the public and enhance quality of life for Solano County residents. National Public Works Week provides an opportunity to recognize these contributions and celebrate the professionals whose work keeps our communities functioning and thriving.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
The cost associated with preparing the agenda item are nominal and absorbed by the Department’s FY2025/26 Working Budget. The cost associated with the preparation and purchase of the resolution materials are nominal and included in the Board’s FY2025/26 Working Budget.
ALTERNATIVES:
The Board could choose not to approve the resolution. This is not recommended because the resolution raises public awareness regarding the importance of public works in our communities.
