DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION:
Supervisor James recommends that the Board of Supervisors adopt and present a resolution recognizing the Mare Island Technology Academy (MIT) Mock Trial Team for its outstanding performance and accomplishments during the 2025-2026 Mock Trial season and for representing Vallejo and Solano County at the California State Mock Trial Finals for the third consecutive year.
SUMMARY/ DISCUSSION:
The Mare Island Technology Academy (MIT) Mock Trial Team continues to demonstrate exceptional academic achievement, leadership, and dedication through its participation in the California Mock Trial Program. Established in 2023, the MIT Mock Trial Team is currently the only Mock Trial program in Solano County and has rapidly emerged as one of the region’s most competitive teams.
Participation in Mock Trial provides students with valuable experience in public speaking, leadership, teamwork, critical thinking, legal analysis, and civic engagement. Students assume the roles of attorneys, witnesses, defendants, and court personnel in a simulated criminal trial and present their cases before judges and practicing attorneys. Competitors are evaluated on their understanding of legal principles, courtroom procedure, rules of evidence, professionalism, and overall courtroom performance.
Throughout the season, the MIT Mock Trial Team devoted countless hours outside the classroom studying legal concepts, preparing case strategies, and participating in scrimmages and statewide competitions. This year, the team achieved notable success against several highly regarded North Bay programs, including Technology High School, Sonoma Valley High School, and Justin Siena High School, earning three of four judges’ decisions on both the Prosecution and Defense sides during scrimmage competition.
The MIT Mock Trial Team advanced to the California State Finals for the third consecutive year, where team members earned three of four pretrial decisions and an additional judge’s decision during highly competitive rounds against top teams from across California.
Recognition of the MIT Mock Trial Team underscores the importance of youth leadership development, civic education, and academic excellence within Solano County and reflects the extraordinary talent, discipline, and dedication of students throughout the community.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
The costs associated with preparing the agenda item are nominal and absorbed by the department’s FY2025/26 Working Budget.
ALTERNATIVES:
The Board could choose not to adopt the resolution; however this is not recommended as this is an opportunity for the Board to recognize the achievements of the MIT Mock Trial team in reaching the state finals and demonstrating exceptional leadership skills.
OTHER AGENCY INVOLVEMENT:
None.
