DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION:

The Sheriff’s Office requests that the Board adopt and present a resolution recognizing September 14-20, 2025 as National Security Officer Appreciation Week in Solano County.

SUMMARY:

In recognition of the contributions of contract and in-house security officers to safeguard our communities, Allied Universal has designated September 14-20, 2025, as National Security Officer Appreciation Week. This week has been set aside to honor the many security officers who provide safety and support services in public and private sectors across all industries.

The Sheriff’s Office recognizes the need to raise public awareness about the services and functions of security officers and therefore wishes to participate in the upcoming National Security Officer Appreciation Week.

FINANCIAL IMPACT:

The costs associated with preparing the agenda item are nominal and absorbed by the department’s FY2025/26 Working Budget. The costs associated with preparation and purchase of the resolution materials are included in the Board’s FY2025/26 Working Budget.  There is no additional financial impact on the County as a result of recognizing September 14-20, 2025 as National Security Officer’s Appreciation Week.

DISCUSSION:

In 2015, Allied Universal established the third week of September as National Security Officer Appreciation Week to recognize the many roles of security officers, debunk misconceptions and stereotypes, and raise awareness of the career opportunities within the security services industry.

Security Officers are essential personnel who work tirelessly to ensure public safety, often in high-risk or high-pressure environments. Their duties include patrolling premises, controlling building access, monitoring surveillance, emergency response, crime deterrence, and coordination with law enforcement. Security Officers possess a diverse range of skills and knowledge and are trained to respond to security and safety challenges. Security Officers also go above and beyond their duties to build meaningful relationships with the people they protect. They become familiar faces, offering a sense of reassurance and trust.

Currently Solano County employs Sheriff Security Officers, Senior Sheriff Security Officers, and contracts with security guard companies to safeguard County buildings and operations. Creating a safe and secure environment is critical to successful business operations enhancing engagement, morale, and productivity. Additionally, security officers and/or security guards ensure the safety and well-being of residents and property while safeguarding both public and private infrastructure and buildings for local agencies, merchants, and landlords.

National Security Officer Appreciation Week provides an opportunity to recognize and celebrate security officers for their dedication, commitment, and professionalism.

ALTERNATIVES:

The Board could choose not to adopt this resolution; however, this alternative is not recommended as this week is an opportunity to recognize the dedicated professionals who serve as Security Officers and thank them for their service.

OTHER AGENCY INVOLVEMENT:

None.
