DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION:
Supervisor Williams recommends that the Board adopt a resolution recognizing April 14, 2026, as Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, to commemorate the approximately 6 million victims of the Holocaust.
SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:
Yom HaShoah, the Jewish Day of Remembrance for the victims of the Holocaust, will be observed on April 14, 2026. Its full name, Yom HaShoah Ve-Hagevurah, “Day of (Remembrance of) the Holocaust and the Heroism,” honors both the six million Jews who perished and the extraordinary acts of resistance and courage shown during that time.
The observance takes place on the 27th day of the Hebrew month of Nisan, occurring one week after the seventh day of Passover and one week before Yom HaZikaron, Israel’s Memorial Day for fallen soldiers and victims of terror. When the 27th of Nisan falls on a Friday or Sunday, the date is adjusted by one day to avoid conflict with Shabbat. In 2026, Yom HaShoah begins at sundown on April 13 and concludes at sundown on April 14.
Established by the Knesset (Israel’s parliament) on April 12, 1951, the observance was later formally named Yom HaShoah Ve-Hagevurah in legislation enacted on August 19, 1953. While rooted in Israeli law, Yom HaShoah has become a solemn day of remembrance marked by Jewish communities and individuals around the world.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
The costs associated with preparation of the agenda item are nominal and absorbed by the Department’s FY2025/26 Working Budget. The costs associated with the preparation and purchase of the resolution materials are included in the Board’s FY2025/26 Working Budget.
ALTERNATIVES:
The Board could choose not to adopt the resolution, however that is not recommended as it is important to remember the victims of the Holocaust.
OTHER AGENCY INVOLVEMENT:
There is no other agency involvement.
