DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION:
Supervisor Mashburn requests that the Board adopt and present resolutions proclaiming the week of May 12, 2026, as Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) Week in Solano County and recognizing the contributions of four high school JROTC units in Solano County.
SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:
Solano County is fortunate to have four Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) units within its boundaries, including three affiliated with the United States Air Force and one sponsored by the United States Navy. The primary objective of the JROTC program is to instill values of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility, leadership, and a sense of accomplishment. The program provides cadets with opportunities to develop and apply leadership skills by planning and organizing events and activities under the guidance of their instructors. Each program also includes an academic component, with aerospace science as the focus of Air Force JROTC and naval science as the focus of Navy JROTC. Currently, 365 students are enrolled across the four schools participating in the program.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
The costs associated with preparing the agenda item are nominal and absorbed by the District 5 FY2025/26 Working Budget. The costs associated with the preparation and purchase of the resolution materials are included in the Board’s FY2025/26 Working Budget.
ALTERNATIVES:
The Board may choose not to adopt these resolutions. This is not recommended as adopting these resolutions provides an opportunity to recognize some of our local students and their instructors who have contributed to the community through thousands of volunteer hours fundraising and supporting local Veteran and non-profit organizations. This type of recognition is in keeping with the values of the Solano County Board of Supervisors.
OTHER AGENCY INVOLVEMENT:
Faculty affiliated with the JROTC programs at Armijo High School, Fairfield High School, Jesse M. Bethel High School, and Vanden High School were consulted and coordinated with regarding this recognition item.
