DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION:
Adopt a Resolution in recognition of the 30th Anniversary of the Solano Land Trust and their efforts in restoring and preserving natural habitats and agricultural lands.
SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:
Founded in 1986 as the Solano County Farmlands and Open Space Foundation and renamed the Solano Land Trust (SLT) in 2004, the SLT has protected over 22,000 acres, restored important natural habitat, and preserved agricultural and rangelands.
Working in close partnership with landowners, county, state and federal agencies, cattle and sheep grazers, nonprofits and many dedicated volunteers, SLT will continue to protect and preserve Solano County’s farmland, ranchland, and open space well into the future.
One such partnership is the Lynch Canyon Open Space Park which since May 2007, has been operated jointly by the Solano County Parks and Recreation Division and the Solano Land Trust, through a cooperative management agreement. In addition to Lynch Canyon SLT operates Rush Ranch, Jepson Prairie Preserve, King-Swett Ranches and Rockville Trails. Each site represents the rich and varied landscape that makes Solano County unique.
As a result of SLT’s Agricultural Conservation Easements Plan, which proposes to protect lands with highly productive soils and adequate agricultural water, 17 farmers and ranchers have benefited from agricultural easements and have permanently protected the land.
The work and goals of SLT augment the goals of the Solano County General Plan in the value placed on open space and agriculture and the benefits of clean air and water, fresh food, wildlife habitat, and sheer scenic beauty.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
There is no fiscal impact associated with this resolution.
ALTERNATIVES:
The Board could choose not to adopt the resolution, however it would be a missed opportunity to recognize the contribution of the Solano Land Trust to the preservation of open space and agriculture.
