DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION:
The Department of Health and Social Services recommends that the Board of Supervisors adopt and present a resolution recognizing March 24, 2026, as World Tuberculosis Day in Solano County.
SUMMARY/ DISCUSSION:
World Tuberculosis (TB) Day, observed annually on March 24th, commemorates Dr. Robert Koch’s discovery of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis in 1882. The 2026 global theme is “Yes! We can end TB! - Led by countries, powered by people.” The theme emphasizes the urgent need for sustained commitment, investment, and delivery of TB prevention and care strategies worldwide. To recognize World TB Day, the Solano Public Health Division will provide outreach and education to community members in Fairfield about tuberculosis, as well as share education about TB through social media.
According to the World Health Organization, TB remains the leading infectious disease killer globally, causing illness in more than 10.7 million people and claiming approximately 1.23 million lives in 2024. According to the California Department of Public Health, TB mortality increased from 8.4% in 2010 to 14% (258 individuals) in 2022. Solano County reported 21 active TB cases in 2024, evaluated 107 individuals for suspected TB, screened 140 contacts, and followed up on 218 immigrant referrals.
The mission of the Health & Social Services Department (H&SS) is to promote healthy, safe, and stable lives. H&SS Public Health is committed to TB control and prevention through case management, contact investigation, latent tuberculosis infection screening for high-risk individuals, and strengthened surveillance to detect and prevent potential outbreaks, while promoting health equity and reducing stigma. The Solano County Tuberculosis Control Program works every day to support the treatment of active TB cases and reduce the spread of tuberculosis and related illnesses.
Financial impact:
The costs associated with the preparation and purchase of resolution materials are included in the Board’s FY2025/26 Working Budget. There is no additional impact on the County General Fund.
ALTERNATIVES:
The Board of Supervisors could choose not to adopt and present this resolution recognizing March 24, 2026, as World TB Day. This is not recommended because the resolution promotes increased awareness of the risk of TB to the Solano community.
OTHER AGENCY INVOLVEMENT:
None.
