DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION:

Supervisor Vasquez requests the Board adopt a resolution recognizing the sixth anniversary of the Solano Commission for Women and Girls and recognizing the six Women of The Year honorees: including Regina Yin, Cynthia Garcia, Lisa Hilas, Judge Nichelle Holmes, Tiffanee Jones and Jeann McDougald.

SUMMARY:

The Solano Commission for Women and Girls was established as an advisory committee to the Solano Board of Supervisors on April 24, 2018, to provide community education and advisement to the Solano County Board of Supervisors on issues relating to the changing social and economic conditions of women and girls in the county.

The Friends of the Commission for Women and Girls was established in October 2022 as a non-profit agency to support the Solano Commission for Women and Girls.

The Solano Commission has created several signature programs, including the Women and Money Conference, the You.Matter.Period project in partnership with Touro University’s School of Medicine’s Chapter of the American Medical Women’s Association, the Birth Justice, Maternal Care, and Birth Rights for Women of Color program, and a Community Enhancement web program as a resource for women and girls in the county.  This year, the Commission and the Friends of the Commission celebrate the sixth anniversary with a Gala on October 18, 2024, recognizing six Excellent Women Leaders in the community.

The honorees, representing a diverse range of backgrounds and professions, are Lifetime Achievement Award and Woman of the Year recipient Regina Yin, Philanthropist, Entrepreneur, and Co-founder of the non-profit Asian Pacific Islander American Public Affairs Association (APAPA);  Women of the Year Cynthia Garcia, Specialty Courts Manager for Solano County Superior Courts, Lisa Hilas, entrepreneurial leader and President of On-Stage Vacaville;  Judge Nichelle Holmes appointed to the Superior Court of Contra Costa; Tiffanee Jones, District Director for Assemblymember Lori Wilson at the California State Assembly; Jeann McDougald, Psychotherapist, and Holistic Support Counselor.

FINANCIAL IMPACT:

The cost associated with preparing this agenda item are nominal and absorbed by the department’s FY2024/25 Working Budget. The cost associated with preparation and purchase of resolution materials are included in the Board’s FY2024/25 Working Budget.

ALTERNATIVES:

The Board could choose not to adopt this resolution, however, that is not recommended as this is an opportunity to recognize and honor the Solano Commission for Women and Girls and excellent women leaders in our county.
