DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION:
Supervisor Wanda Williams recommends that the Board of Supervisors adopt and present a resolution recognizing World Autism Awareness Day, internationally recognized each year on April 2, to raise awareness about the millions of Americans and 67 million people around the world living with autism spectrum disorder.
SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:
Autism affects children of all racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds and occurs approximately four times more often in boys than in girls. Fortunately, autism can often be detected at an early age. Research shows that children diagnosed between birth and age three who receive consistent medical care and early intervention services frequently demonstrate significant improvements in communication, behavior, and learning. Early diagnosis allows families to access therapies and resources that can greatly influence a child’s development.
Parents play a critical role as advocates for their children, guiding them through medical treatments, educational systems, and specialized therapies. This advocacy often continues well beyond childhood. After high school, many families face the difficult task of finding appropriate programs, employment opportunities, and support services for their adult children. Each year, more than 50,000 autistic young adults age out of school-based support systems in the United States, many of whom struggle to find adequate services and community support.
Raising a child with autism can profoundly affect a family’s daily routines, emotional well-being, and long-term planning. Parents frequently encounter a steep learning curve as they research therapies, navigate service systems, and discover effective ways to communicate with and support their child. Siblings may also experience a range of emotions, from pride in their sibling’s achievements to feelings of being overlooked. In addition, the high cost of therapies and specialized care can create financial strain for many families.
Despite these challenges, many families discover resilience and strength through their experiences. They often develop deeper family bonds and a strong sense of purpose as advocates for their loved ones. Through persistence, education, and community support, families continue to champion the needs and potential of individuals with autism at every stage of life.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
The costs associated with preparing the agenda item are nominal and absorbed by the District 3 FY2025/26 Working Budget.
ALTERNATIVES:
The Board could choose not to adopt this resolution but that would not be recommended given the significance of World Autism Day and the importance of awareness.
