DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the Board receive a presentation from the Department of Resource Management on the selection of John Millea for "Employee of the Month" for August 2017, making him eligible to use the parking space designated for this program.
SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:
On September 13, 2005, the Board of Supervisors established the County Government Center "Employee of the Month” parking program for County employees. Each month a County department is designated to select one of its employees as "Employee of the Month." The Department of Resource Management has been designated to select an employee for August 2017. The Department has selected John Millea as the deserving employee.
John began working with the Department of Resource Management as a Civil Engineer-Plan Check on May 23, 2016. In a short time, John has become an essential member of the Building Division, delivering accurate and timely plan check reviews and demonstrating patience and professionalism when interacting with the public. John also takes initiative to pitch-in and help whenever he perceives a need.
Although John has only been with the Building Division for a little over 14 months, he has demonstrated a keen aptitude for understanding how his role interfaces with other divisions within the Department. This has contributed to his effectiveness in moving the permitting process forward.
John is recognized throughout the Department for his commitment and excellent customer service skills, both to the public and to other county staff. He consistently demonstrates a positive attitude and willingness to help other staff and the public seeking advice and assistance.
John comes to Solano County from the Midwest --- shortly after his arrival at Solano County he ignited a good-natured sports rivalry by touting his favorite baseball team the Chicago Cubs, and this in a division of A’s and Giants fans. Needless to say, he had the opportunity to gloat over the Cubs change in fortunes, and he did, but in a positive and fun way. John demonstrates good sportsmanship in his style and attitude and this is reflected in his daily interactions with others, his ability to work as team player, and to remain cool under pressure.
John has demonstrated professionalism and excellence in the performance of his duties and serves as a shining example for others which reflects well on the Department and County. Considering his extensive knowledge and abilities relative to construction engineering and building codes, his work ethic and his positive attitude, John is deserving of the "Employee of the Month" recognition.

No financial impact is associated with this agenda item.
ALTERNATIVES:
The Board could elect to name someone else as the “Employee of the Month”; however, this alternative is not recommended as John Millea is deserving of the Board's "Employee of the Month” parking program.
