DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION:
The Department of Resource Management recommends that the Board of Supervisors adopt and present a resolution and plaque of appreciation honoring Craig Pyle, Engineering Services Supervisor, upon his retirement from the Department of Resource Management with over 34 years of dedicated public service.
SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:
Craig Pyle will be retiring on July 14, 2024 as an engineering services supervisor with the Department of Resource Management after 17 years of service with the Department of Resource Management and 34 total years of public service to Solano County residents. In 1982, Mr. Pyle earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering with Honors from the University of Wyoming and immediately began his engineering career working for Mare Island Naval Shipyard. At Mare Island, Mr. Pyle worked in the Design Branch where he earned his Professional Civil Engineer license in 1985 and promoted to structural engineer. His work there entailed extensive structural, civil and geotechnical work to maintain and improve shipyard buildings.
In 1995, Craig was promoted to work as part of the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) Focus Team where he was tasked with lease compliance, local area network engineering, and hazardous materials inventories. As Mare Island Naval Shipyard closed, Mr. Pyle left in 1999 to begin his own structural engineering firm in Vallejo. Craig worked on residential and commercial structural designs throughout Solano County for eight years. Desiring more physically active employment, Craig found employment with the Department of Resource Management in 2007 as an engineering technician (entry). Craig worked primarily in the construction unit as an inspector, being promoted to an engineering technician (journey) in 2008 and again in 2015 when he was promoted to engineer assistant.
Utilizing his extensive structural engineering experience, Craig provided engineering expertise on the replacements of the Suisun Valley Road Bridge, Grizzly Island Road Bridge, and Winters Bridge. In 2018, Mr. Pyle promoted to civil engineer, senior where he became the lead design engineer on numerous road and bridge projects, including Cantelow Road Bridge, McCormack Road Phase 1, Suisun Valley Farm to Market, and Timm Road Improvement Project. In 2021, he was promoted to engineering services supervisor where he masterfully blended construction engineering, design engineering and mentoring into one position.
Throughout his time in the Department, Mr. Pyle continued his engineering education and training by taking many classes and obtaining various certifications. During his time as a technician and engineer, he worked in almost every aspect of the Public Works Engineering Division and can perform any division technical duty. In his years of employment with Solano County, Mr. Pyle was a cornerstone member of Public Works Engineering Division, delivering countless road and bridge projects during this time. Craig is recognized for his extensive inspections, exceptional design work, and astute mentoring provided to staff. Craig is also recognized for his engineering tradition, shovel work with the crews, and pursuit of the truth. We wish him all the best in his retirement from public service and with his new adventures in this next chapter of his life.
