DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION:
Supervisor Vasquez requests that the Board adopt a resolution recognizing June 2025 as National Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month and June 20, 2025, as The Longest Day in Solano County.
SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:
An estimated 6.9 million Americans aged 65 and older live with Alzheimer's disease, according to the Alzheimer's Association. The current projected number of Californians aged 65 or older living with Alzheimer's disease is more than 720,000. In Solano County, more than 8,000 residents are living with Alzheimer's and an estimated 21,000 family caregivers are providing care for a loved one with Alzheimer's in Solano County.
The COVID-19 pandemic has created additional challenges for people living with dementia, their families, and caregivers, particularly in long-term care settings such as nursing homes and assisted living communities. According to the Alzheimer's Association, between 2019 and 2020, COVID-19 contributed to a 10.5 percent increase in Alzheimer's and dementia related deaths. Four years later, in 2024, health and long-term costs for people living with Alzheimer's and other dementias was projected to reach $360 billion.
In addition to June being recognized as National Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month, advocates observe June 20, 2025, as "The Longest Day." The Longest Day is the day with the most light-the summer solstice. On June 20, thousands of participants from across the world come together to fight the darkness of Alzheimer's through an activity of their choice. Together, they use their creativity and passion to raise funds and awareness for the care, support, and research efforts of the Alzheimer's Association....
