DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION:

The Sheriff recommends the Board of Supervisors adopt and present a resolution recognizing September 2024 as National Preparedness Month.

SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:

National Preparedness Month is a nationwide effort observed in September each year to encourage community members to take simple steps to prepare for emergencies whether they are at home, work, school, or just out and about. The aim is to raise awareness and educate about the importance of preparedness. This recognition also supports the Board's focus on emergency preparedness and community resilience.

The mission of the Solano County Office of Emergency Services (OES), a unit within the Sheriff's Office, is to protect lives, property, and the environment by preparing for, responding to, recovering from, and mitigating the effects of, natural and human caused emergencies and disasters in the county; thereby improving the overall resiliency of our community. With a goal to make the community stronger and better prepared for whatever may come their way.

Throughout the month, OES will be providing preparedness information through social media platforms, website, and community outreach events. OES regularly coordinates with the cities, special districts, nonprofits, and community-based organizations to further our mission and educate on the importance of preparedness. OES also works with local news and radio outlets, including 95.3 KUIC to provide year-round public service announcements on preparedness, emergency planning, and to provide information during emergencies.
