DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION:
Supervisor James recommends that the Board of Supervisors adopt and present a resolution recognizing the Mare Island Technology Academy 2024-2025 Mock Trial Team for reaching the state finals.
SUMMARY/ DISCUSSION:
The Mare Island Technology (MIT) Academy Mock Trial Program established a new Mock Trial team in 2023, which is currently the only Mock Trial team in Solano County. The Mock Trial team participation teaches students skills in public speaking, leadership, critical thinking, and a variety of other skills while providing hands-on experience in legal practices. Students are introduced to the American legal system through simulated courtroom trials, where they take on roles as attorneys, witnesses, and court personnel.
Mock trials are conducted before judges and attorneys who grade the students on their preparation; mastery of facts, the law, and rules of evidence; and their demeanor and poise. Teams from each County in California compete to qualify for the state finals competition each spring. This year the MIT Mock Trial team represented the City of Vallejo and the County of Solano in the 2024-2025 state finals.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
The costs associated with preparing the agenda item are nominal and absorbed by the department’s FY2024/25 Working Budget.
ALTERNATIVES:
The Board could choose not to adopt the resolution, however this is not recommended as this is an opportunity for the Board to recognize the achievements of the MIT Mock Trial team in reaching the 2024-2025 state finals.
OTHER AGENCY INVOLVEMENT:
None.
