DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION:
Supervisor Williams recommends that the Board of Supervisors adopt a resolution recognizing September 7, 2026, as World Duchenne Awareness Day in Solano County.
SUMMARY/ DISCUSSION:
World Duchenne Awareness Day, observed annually on September 7, was established in 2014 by Elizabeth Vroom and Nicoletta Madia, both active members of the World Duchenne Organization. The observance was created to raise global awareness of Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy and to amplify the voices of individuals and families affected by these rare genetic conditions. September 7 was selected to represent the 79 exons of the dystrophin gene, mutations in which cause Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). Since its inception, World Duchenne Awareness Day has grown into a global movement, bringing together individuals, families, advocates, health care professionals, researchers and organizations around the world. In 2026, the United Nations officially recognized September 7 as World Duchenne Awareness Day, marking an important milestone for the global Duchenne and rare disease communities.
The 2026 theme, “Access Changes Lives,” highlights the importance of removing physical, medical and social barriers for people living with Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy. The international campaign emphasizes equitable access to early diagnosis, specialized care and treatment, clinical trials, education, community participation and other opportunities that support quality of life and greater independence.
