DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION:

The Solano County Veteran Service Office (CVSO) recommends that the Board of Supervisors adopt and present a resolution recognizing Monday, May 26, 2025, as Memorial Day, a day to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation.

SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:

Memorial Day, which falls on the last Monday of May, commemorates the men and women who died while serving in the American military. It is a time to gather to remember, to reflect and to honor those who have died in our nation's service.

General Order Number 11 was written and issued by General John A. Logan, designating May 30, 1868, as the first official Decoration Day. This day was first enacted to honor Union and Confederate soldiers of the American Civil War. It was expanded after World War I to include American casualties of any war or military action.

Here in Solano County, this resolution is an important demonstration to our more than 30,000 veterans and their families, including those serving at Travis Air Force Base, that Solano County remembers and respects the sacrifices our veteran community has made for the freedoms we enjoy. We owe our thanks and honor the many veterans of Solano County who have died while in military service to their county.

FINANCIAL IMPACT:

The cost associated with preparing the agenda item is nominal and absorbed by the Department's FY2024/25 Working Budget. The costs associated with preparation and purchase of the resolution materials are included in the Board's FY2024/25 Working Budget.

ALTERNATIVES:

The Board may choose not to adopt the resolution, but this is not recommended because it is an opportunity to honor and rem...
