DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION:
Supervisor Williams recommends that the Board adopt a resolution recognizing May 2026 as Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in Solano County.
SUMMARY / DISCUSSION:
May is recognized as Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month, a time to honor and celebrate the rich histories, diverse cultures, and significant contributions of AANHPI communities to the United States. This month provides an opportunity to reflect on the many ways in which AANHPI individuals have helped shape our nation's social, cultural, economic, and civic life, while also acknowledging the challenges and injustices these communities have faced throughout history.
The month of May was chosen to commemorate two important milestones: the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to the United States on May 7, 1843, and the pivotal role of Chinese immigrant laborers in completing the first transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869, an achievement that helped unite the country and expand economic opportunity, despite the immense hardships and discrimination those workers endured.
In Solano County, the achievements and contributions of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders have deeply enriched our communities and the broader history of California and the nation. AANHPI residents have played vital roles in public service, education, business, agriculture, healthcare, the arts, and civic leadership, strengthening the fabric of our community through their resilience, innovation, and cultural heritage.
