DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION:

The Department of Health and Social Services (H&SS) recommends that the Board adopt and present a resolution declaring April 1-7, 2013 as Public Health Week in Solano County.

SUMMARY:

For more than a decade, communities around the country have celebrated National Public Health Week (NPHW) each April by highlighting public health achievements and raising awareness of issues important to improving the public’s health. This year, the theme is “Public Health is Return on Investment (ROI): Save Lives, Save Money”.

FINANCIAL IMPACT:

The staff time associated with the preparation of this item is budgeted within the Department’s 2012/13 Adopted budget.

DISCUSSION:

Each year, the American Public Health Association (APHA), selects a different issue around which to rally together and focus on efforts to protect the nation’s health. This year’s theme is “Public Health is ROI: Save Lives, Save Money”. NPHW will help educate families, communities and public officials about the importance of public health and its return on investment - that is the investment of resources into public health can be measured in lives saved, diseases and injuries mitigated or prevented, and cost avoided.

Solano Public Health has several events planned during this week, including:
