DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION:

Supervisor Vasquez requests the Board adopt and present a resolution recognizing June 14, 2025 as the 250th birthday of the United States Army.

SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:

The Army of the United Colonies was created June 14, 1775 by the Continental Congress. Its first General and Commander in Chief was George Washington, of Virginia, who would also go on to be elected the first president of the United States of America.

On July 4, 1776, upon the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the Army of the United Colonies would become the Army of the United States, making the U.S. Army effectively one year older than the United States itself.

Over eighty years ago, the U.S. Army helped lead the charge to liberate Europe during World War II and has been instrumental in numerous wars and battles across the globe, including the Korean War, Vietnam, and the Middle East. Beyond the battlefield the U.S. Army has also shown itself to be a leader. The U.S. Army supports disaster relief efforts at home and abroad and can rapidly deploy to locations around the globe when there is a need.

For 250 years the U.S. Army has offered endless possibilities and opportunities for service to our nation. From the Revolutionary War to the present day, Americans have served selflessly, sacrificing their freedom - and sometimes their lives - in defense of the nation. Their courage, loyalty and dedication have inspired generations, forging a proud tradition of service.
