DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION:
Supervisor Williams recommends that the Board adopt a resolution recognizing April 24, 2025 as Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, to commemorate the approximately six million victims of the Holocaust.
SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:
Yom HaShoah, also known as Holocaust Remembrance Day, is a solemn day in the Jewish faith dedicated to honoring the memory of the six million Jews who perished in the Holocaust. The full name, Yom HaShoah Ve-Hagevurah, translates to "The Day of Remembrance of the Holocaust and the Heroism," recognizing not only the victims but also the resistance and bravery of those who fought back. Yom HaShoah falls on the 27th of Nisan in the Hebrew calendar-typically a week after the seventh day of Passover and a week before Yom HaZikaron, Israel's Memorial Day for fallen soldiers. If the 27th of Nisan lands on a Friday or Sunday, the observance is adjusted to avoid conflicting with Shabbat, the Jewish day of rest.
In 2025, Yom HaShoah begins at sundown on April 23 and ends at sundown on April 24. The date was originally chosen by the Knesset (the Israeli Parliament) on April 12, 1951, and the full name-Yom HaShoah Ve-Hagevurah-was formally established in legislation passed on August 19, 1953. Although the observance was initiated by the Israeli government, it has since become a day of remembrance honored by Jewish communities and individuals around the world.
