DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION:

Supervisor James request the Board of Supervisors adopt a resolution honoring The Wall That Heals, the traveling Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and its visit to our neighboring Napa County in the City of American Canyon, recognizing its significance to Vietnam veterans, their families, and the broader community.

SUMMARY/BACKGROUND:

The Wall That Heals is a traveling three-quarter scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., accompanied by a Mobile Education Center. Created by the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, the exhibit has visited communities across the United States since 1996, offering the public an opportunity to honor and remember the more than 58,000 men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Vietnam War.

The memorial's presence is particularly significant for those who may not have the means or ability to travel to Washington, D.C. It provides veterans, families, students, and community members the chance to experience the solemnity of the memorial and learn about the history and legacy of the Vietnam War.

Solano County is home to a large veteran population, including many who served during the Vietnam War. Hosting The Wall That Heals in our community, provides a unique opportunity for remembrance, healing, and education within the region. Its presence reaffirms the community's longstanding commitment to honoring veterans and supporting their families, while also preserving the stories and sacrifices of those who served for future generations.

FINANCIAL IMPACT:

The costs associated with preparing the agenda item are nominal and absorbed by the department's FY2025/26 Working Budget.
