DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION:

Supervisor Brown requests that the Board of Supervisors authorize the County's contribution of $800 from General Fund contribution allocated to District 2 to benefit Food is Free Solano.

SUMMARY / DISCUSSION:

Food is Free Solano ($800)
Food is Free Solano, doing business as Food is Free Bay Area, is a volunteer-run organization that provides free food resources to community members in need and is supported entirely by local volunteers and community contributions. Funding will support the continuation of the Benicia Summer Food Program, which serves students and families experiencing food insecurity during the summer months.

The program will operate as a site-based food distribution at the Benicia Public Library, where many children and families face increased food insecurity when school meals are unavailable. Beginning in June 2026, the program will provide weekly food distributions for nine weeks. It is expected to serve at least 100 households, impacting an estimated 300 individuals. In addition, a portion of the funds will help expand food assistance for seniors experiencing food insecurity in the cities of Benicia and Vallejo, ensuring that vulnerable older adults also have access to essential food resources.

Guidelines for Grant Funding Requests:

During the FY2025/26 Budget Hearings, the Board appropriated $75,000, $15,000 to each supervisorial district, to allow Board members to support community service programs. The Board directed County Counsel to provide guidelines on how to recommend funding for qualifying agencies or programs.
