DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION:

Supervisor Wanda Williams requests the Board adopt and present a resolution recognizing November 2026 as Native American Heritage Month in Solano County.

SUMMARY/ DISCUSSION:

November is recognized as Native American Heritage Month at both the national and state levels, providing an opportunity to honor the rich histories, diverse cultures, traditions, and significant contributions of Native American peoples. The annual observance also recognizes the enduring presence, cultural heritage, and important role of Native American communities in shaping the history and future of our nation, state, and local communities.

Native Americans are the Indigenous peoples of North America, representing hundreds of distinct tribal nations, each with its own unique history, cultural traditions, languages, and customs. These include Indigenous communities throughout the United States, as well as the Patwin people, whose ancestral homelands encompass portions of present-day Solano, Yolo, Colusa, Lake, and Napa Counties. The Patwin people and other Native American communities continue to preserve their cultural identities, maintain connections to their ancestral lands, and contribute to the cultural richness and diversity of Solano County and the surrounding region.

FINANCIAL IMPACT:

The costs associated with preparing the agenda item are nominal and absorbed by the District 3 FY2026/27 Working Budget.

ALTERNATIVES:

The Board could choose not to adopt this resolution, however, that is not recommended as this is an opportunity to honor and reflect on the heritage, history and traditions of Native Americans.
