DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION:

Supervisor James recommends the Board of Supervisors adopt and present a resolution recognizing June 2026 as Philippine Cultural Month in Solano County.

SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:

The proposed resolution recognizes June 2026 as Philippine Cultural Month in Solano County and honors the longstanding contributions, heritage, and cultural impact of the Filipino American community. The resolution acknowledges the historic ties between Solano County and the Philippines dating back to 1898, as well as the 80th anniversary of both the founding of the Filipino Community of Solano County, Inc. and Philippine independence in 1946. These milestones provide an opportunity to recognize the generations of Filipino Americans who have contributed to the civic, cultural, economic, military, and social fabric of Solano County.

The resolution also recognizes the 40th annual Vallejo Pista Sa Nayon festival, which attracts more than 10,000 attendees annually and serves as a celebration of Filipino culture, heritage, and community. The 2026 theme, “Honoring Our Culture Through Kwentuhan (Storytelling),” highlights the importance of preserving cultural traditions, strengthening intergenerational connections, and fostering unity through community engagement, arts, education, and local economic activity.

FINANCIAL IMPACT:

The costs associated with preparing the agenda item are nominal and absorbed by the department’s FY2025/26 Working Budget.

ALTERNATIVES:

The Board could choose not to adopt the resolution, however that is not the recommendation because this is an opportunity to recognize Philippine Cultural Month in Solano County.

OTHER AGENCY INVOLVEMENT:

None.
