DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION:

Supervisor Vasquez requests the Board adopt and present a resolution recognizing May 20, 2025, as World Bee Day in Solano County.

SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:

Bees and other pollinators are vital to human survival. With over 20,000 bee species and countless wild pollinators, these creatures make it possible to grow many of the plants that form the foundation of our diets. Pollinators play a critical role in supporting both agriculture and biodiversity. However, their health and survival are increasingly at risk due to habitat loss and unsustainable farming practices. Bees alone contribute to the production of approximately 75 percent of the world’s crops, including fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds. World Bee Day, observed on May 20th, serves as a crucial reminder of the need to strengthen our efforts to protect bees and other pollinators. By doing so, we safeguard food security, nutrition, agricultural livelihoods, biodiversity, and the broader environment.

FINANCIAL IMPACT:

The costs associated with preparing the agenda item are nominal and absorbed by the department’s FY2024/25 Working Budget. The costs associated with preparation and purchase of the resolution materials are nominal and included in the Board’s FY2024/25 Working Budget.

ALTERNATIVES:

The Board could choose not to adopt a resolution recognizing World Bee Day, however, that is not recommended as this is an opportunity to raise awareness on the importance of bees and ways to protect them.
