DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION:
The Sheriff recommends that the Board of Supervisors:
1. Adopt a resolution amending the List of Numbers and Classifications of Positions to add 2.0 FTE Sergeant-Sheriff (Limited-Term Project) through December 31, 2026 to provide supervision to the Deputies assigned to Vallejo to provide supplemental general law enforcement services; and
2. Approve an Appropriation Transfer Request to recognize unanticipated revenue from the City of Vallejo of $5,369,815 in the Sheriff's Operating budget offset by appropriations for providing law enforcement services to Vallejo including fixed asset purchases and reducing the General Fund Contribution. SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:
In July 2023, the City of Vallejo (Vallejo) declared a public safety staffing emergency due to their low staffing levels and requested assistance from the Sheriff's Office. Due to staffing challenges in the Sheriff's Office, the Sheriff requested the assistance of Senator Bill Dodd to introduce SB 1379, which was signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom in September 2024, to allow retired personnel to temporarily backfill key roles so active staff can assist Vallejo.
