DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION:
Supervisor Vasquez requests that the Board adopt and present a resolution recognizing April 2025 as Fair Housing Month in Solano County.
SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:
On April 11, 1968, President Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1968, which was meant as a follow-up to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The 1968 Act expanded on previous acts and prohibited discrimination concerning the sale, rental, and financing of housing based on race, religion, national origin, sex, (and as amended) handicap and family status. Title VIII of the Act is also known as the Fair Housing Act (of 1968).
While advancement has been made in eliminating housing discrimination, families with children, women, people with disabilities, people of color, religious minorities, immigrants, LGBTQ individuals, and low-income individuals who receive public assistance, among others, still face discriminatory barriers to housing.
Fair Housing Month reminds us that the principle of fair housing is not just state and federal law, but a fundamental human concept. When Americans are denied access to housing, it can lead to unequal living standards, poverty, housing instability, and more, according to the National Fair Housing Alliance.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
The costs associated with preparing the agenda item are nominal and absorbed by the department's FY2024/25 Working Budget. The costs associated with preparation and purchase of the resolution materials are included in the Board's FY2024/25 Working Budget.
ALTERNATIVES:
