DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION:
The Solano County Veteran Service Office (CVSO) recommends that the Board of Supervisors adopt and present a resolution recognizing Monday, May 25, 2026, as Memorial Day in Solano County, a day to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation.
SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:
Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday of May, is a solemn occasion dedicated to honoring the men and women who gave their lives while serving in the United States Armed Forces. In this, the 250th year of our nation, we come together not only to remember their sacrifice, but also to reflect on the enduring ideals of freedom, service, and unity that they defended with their lives.
The origins of Memorial Day trace back to General Order No. 11, issued by General John A. Logan, which designated May 30, 1868, as the first official Decoration Day. Initially established to honor who died in defense of their country during the American Civil War, the observance grew in scope following World War I to recognize all American service members who have died in any war or military action. Over time, it has become a sacred national tradition, one that calls upon each generation to pause in gratitude and remembrance.
Here in Solano County, this resolution stands as a meaningful expression of our community's deep respect for the more than 28,000 veterans who call this county home, as well as their families. It also reflects our strong connection to those currently serving, including the dedicated men and women stationed at Travis Air Force Base, whose ongoing service continues a proud legacy of sacrifice and commitment.
