DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION:
Supervisor Williams recommends that the Board of Supervisors adopt a resolution recognizing August 26, 2026, as National Women’s Equality Day in Solano County.
SUMMARY/ DISCUSSION:
Women’s Equality Day was established at the urging of Rep. Bella Abzug (D-NY). In 1973, Congress designated August 26 as Women’s Equality Day to commemorate the 1920 certification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which recognized women’s right to vote.
The amendment marked a historic milestone in a decades-long movement for women’s rights, with roots stretching back to the 1848 Seneca Falls Convention in New York. Women’s Equality Day honors the generations of women who fought for greater political and social equality while also recognizing that the work toward full equality continues.
At a time when many hard-won rights and opportunities for women continue to be debated and challenged, Women’s Equality Day serves as an important reminder of both the progress that has been made and the ongoing need to protect and advance equality for women.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
The costs associated with preparing the agenda item are nominal and absorbed by the Board’s FY2026/27 Working Budget. The costs associated with preparation and purchase of the resolution materials are included in the Board’s FY2026/27 Working Budget.
ALTERNATIVES:
The Board could choose not to adopt this resolution but that would not be recommended as women's rights are under attack emphasizing the importance of recognizing Women’s Equality Day throughout the United States, the world, and Solano County.
OTHER AGENCY INVOLVEMENT:
There is no other agency involvement.
