DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION:

Supervisor James recommends that the Solano County Board of Supervisors adopt and present a resolution recognizing June 2025 as Gun Violence Awareness Month and June 6, 2025, as Gun Violence Awareness Day.

SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:

Gun violence is an epidemic that devastates our communities, claiming the lives of our families, friends and community members. In Solano County, residents continue to stand united in the fight to end gun violence. To make meaningful progress, we must work together to confront all contributing factors-including historical systemic inequities, mental health challenges, and other underlying issues that exacerbate this crisis.

By joining this national movement and proclaiming June 2025 as Gun Violence Awareness Month, Solano County affirms its commitment to community safety, supports efforts to reduce gun-related deaths and injuries, and uplifts the voices of survivors and advocates working to bring an end to violence.

FINANCIAL IMPACT:

The costs associated with preparing the agenda item are nominal and absorbed by the department’s FY2024/25 Working Budget.

ALTERNATIVES:

The Board of Supervisors could choose not to adopt the resolution, however that is not recommended because this is an opportunity to recognize Gun Violence Awareness.

OTHER AGENCY INVOLVEMENT:

None.
