DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION:

Chair Vasquez requests that the Board adopt and present a resolution recognizing March 20, 2018 as Ag Day in Solano County and March 18-24, 2018 as National Ag Week.

SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:

Ag Day is celebrated on March 20, 2018. Ag Day falls during National Ag Week, March 18-24, 2018. Ag Day and National Ag Week offer a time to recognize the value of agriculture and celebrate the farmers and ranchers dedicated to producing food that helps to feed not only local residents, but people around the world.

In addition to a national campaign, the Solano County Fair Association will host its 16th annual Youth Ag Day March 20, 2018. Youth Ag Day brings volunteers, local farmers and ranchers, businesses and agricultural agencies together in an educational and fun environment to learn about the important role agriculture plays in our everyday lives.

With more than 80 crops grown, Solano County is the second-most diverse county agriculturally in the state. Solano County agricultural commodities are exported to nearly 40 countries around the globe. Of the roughly 860 full-time and part-time farms in the county, 41 were certified for organic production, according to the 2016 Crop and Livestock Report. With such rich agricultural history and diversity, Ag Day and Ag Week provide an excellent time for individuals to learn more about agriculture and the farmers and ranchers of Solano County.

FINANCIAL IMPACT:

There is no fiscal impact associated with this resolution.

ALTERNATIVES:
