DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION:

Chair Vasquez requests that the Board receive a presentation from the Solano County Fair Association on the outcome of the 16th Annual Youth Ag Day.

SUMMARY:

Across the nation, March 20, 2018, is recognized as Ag Day. Ag Day and National Ag Week offer a time to recognize the value of agriculture and celebrate the farmers and ranchers dedicated to producing food that helps to feed not only local residents, but people around the world.

This year marks the 16th Annual Youth Ag Day held at the Solano County Fairgrounds. The event is a collaborative effort of the Solano County Fair Association and local farmers, ranchers, businesses and governmental agencies. The program invites third grade students from across Solano County to experience agriculture first-hand through a variety of displays and hands-on learning stations. Activities are designed to give children the opportunity to learn about food and fiber production from new perspectives, with a particular emphasis on the agricultural wealth of Solano County.

The event, including transportation, is offered at no cost to students and their teachers through donations from the community.

In 2017, more than 2,600 third-graders participated in the free event.

FINANCIAL IMPACT:

The cost associated with preparing this agenda item is included in District 4's FY2017/18 Adopted Budget. SCFA allocated $30,000 for the 2018 Youth Ag Day event in its 2018 budget. These funds are derived from sponsorship and fundraising revenue. Actual fundraising totals for 2018 were $41,105.65, with $27,985 coming from cash donations and an additional $13,120.65 in in-kind contribution...
