DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION:

The Veteran Services Office recommends that the Board of Supervisors adopt a resolution recognizing Monday, May 28, 2018 as Memorial Day, a day to honor Americans who died fighting in any War.

SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:

Memorial Day, which falls on the last Monday of May, commemorates the men and women who died while serving in the American military. It is a time to gather to remember, to reflect and to honor those who have died in our nation's service.

General Order Number 11 was written and issued by General John A. Logan designating May 30, 1868 as the first official Decoration Day. This day was first enacted to honor Union and Confederate soldiers of the American Civil War. It was expanded after World War I to include American casualties of any war or military action, known today as Memorial Day.

The County of Solano has a long and rich history in support of the military and the many men and women who have served in honor, sacrifice, and duty. Solano County veterans' organizations and historical societies plan annual Memorial Day ceremonies to remember those who have died in our nation's service. These Memorial Day ceremonies serve to encourage the people of Solano County to reflect and appreciate those who gave so much to ensure the freedom of others.

We owe our thanks and honor the many veterans of Solano County who have died while in military service to their county.

The cost associated with preparing the agenda item is nominal and absorbed by the department's FY2017/18 Adopted Budget. The costs associated with preparation and purchase of the resolution materials are included in the Board's FY2017/18 Adopted Budget.
