DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION:
The Department of Health and Social Services (H&SS) recommends the Board adopt and present a resolution recognizing May 20-26, 2018 as Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Week in Solano County.
SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:
The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) has designated May 20-26, 2018 as National Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Week. National EMS Week brings together local communities and medical personnel to publicize safety and to honor the dedication of those who provide the day-to-day lifesaving services of medicine’s front line. EMS Week is a national salute to the emergency physicians, emergency medical technicians (EMTs), paramedics, firefighters, emergency medical dispatchers, law enforcement agencies, medical flight teams, educators, administrators, and others who provide quality lifesaving emergency care to our nation’s residents.
The Medical Services Division within H&SS includes the County’s EMS Agency which is responsible for monitoring and oversight of the County contracted ambulance service providers as well as designation and monitoring of Trauma Centers, STEMI Centers and Emergency Departments approved for pediatrics. EMS employs a group of professionals who plan the coordination of all the components needed to efficiently respond to individual and community emergencies. Core values include: rapid response to minimize the time from emergency event to arrival of resources; competency in practice in applying clinical field medicine to highest standards using best practices; and accountability to measure, validate, report, and improve processes for the delivery of care. During the Atlas Fires that occurred in October 2017, the EMS Agency was notified and local ambulance resources were mobilized to assist with transporting inpatients from various facilities to designated evacuation sites. During the week of activation, many requests for mutual aid were fulfilled with County resources and EMS related activity continued for several weeks after the Emergency Operations Center was deactivated.
In Solano County, there are approximately 1,400 EMTs and paramedics who provide daily EMS care to residents and visitors. The 2018 national theme is “EMS STRONG: Stronger Together,” and activities are planned to honor EMS providers. On Sunday, May 20, 2018, Solano County will honor our emergency providers by facilitating an EMS Awards and Recognition Banquet located at the Vacaville Opera House. On Wednesday, May 23, 2018, Solano County EMS partners will offer free public CPR training at the Solano Town Center.
ALTERNATIVES:
The Board could choose not to adopt this resolution. This is not recommended because this is an opportunity to recognize the hard work and dedication of Emergency Medical Services providers in Solano County.
OTHER AGENCY INVOLVEMENT:
The following organizations are involved with EMS Week in Solano County: Medic Ambulance, City Fire Departments, District Fire Departments, Police, Sheriff’s Office, California Highway Patrol, CALSTAR Air Ambulance, Reach Air Ambulance, Kaiser Permanente, NorthBay Medical Center, and various ambulance transport companies.
