DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION:

Supervisor Erin Hannigan and Supervisor Monica Brown request that the Board approve the resolution proclaiming June 2018 as Philippine Cultural Month in Solano County.

SUMMARY:

June 12th, 2018 marks the 120th anniversary of Philippine Independence from Spain - after over 300 years of colonial rule - and is celebrated by Filipinos around the world as Philippine Independence Day.

The Philippine Cultural Committee of Vallejo, comprised of over 20 Filipino-American organizations invites members of the public to a free, outdoor day-long festival popularly called "Pista Sa Nayon", on Saturday, June 2, 2018 from 10 am to 6 pm at the Vallejo Waterfront Park.

FINANCIAL IMPACT:

The costs associated with preparing the agenda item is nominal and absorbed by the two districts' FY2017/18 Adopted Budget. The costs associated with preparation and purchase of the resolution materials are included in the Board's FY2017/18 Adopted Budget.

DISCUSSION:

As part of the month-long cultural activities, the annual "Pista Sa Nayon" event consistently draws large crowds to celebrate and experience Philippine culture and traditions with a parade, cultural exhibits, Filipino Martial Arts tournament, food, entertainment for all ages and for the first time hold a "Sunduan" a Filipino tradition that dates to the 18th century, this is a Tagalog word for "fetch", and it features young men fetching young women from their homes to bring them to church. The couples are followed by marching bands as they parade along the community, with the men holding colorful parasols to protect the ladies from the elements.
