DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION:
Chair Vasquez requests that the Board adopt and present a resolution recognizing the 75th anniversary of Travis Air Force Base and its contribution to the safety and security of the United States and its positive impact on Solano County.
SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:
The year 2018 marks the 75th anniversary of Travis Air Force Base and to commemorate the milestone, the 60th Air Mobility Wing and its partner units have planned a year-long celebration, to include events across Northern California to tell the Travis story.
Travis Air Force Base’s beginnings can be traced back to 1942 when the first runway and temporary buildings were constructed for the Fairfield-Suisun Army Air Base during World War II. The base formally opened on June 1, 1943.
Travis Air Force Base is named in honor of Brigadier General Robert F. Travis, who was killed when his B-29 crashed on the installation in 1950.
Across the decades, Travis Air Force Base has grown to become the largest airlift organization within the United States Air Force. In that time, its impact on Solano County has also grown tremendously. It remains the county’s largest employer with 13,400 military and civilian personnel contributing more than $1.6 billion annually to the economy. Not only is it a strategic asset in our nation’s defense, David Grant Medical Center at Travis Air Force Base is the Air Force Medical Service’s flagship medical treatment facility in the United States.
Support for Travis Air Force Base comes from a wide cross-section of individuals and community groups, including the Travis Regional Armed Forces Committee. In local government, Solano County’s 2018 Federal Legislative Platform includes support and advocacy on behalf of Travis Air Force Base as a top priority.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
The cost associated with preparing this agenda item is nominal and absorbed within the District 4 FY2017/18 Adopted Budget. The costs associated with preparation and purchase of the resolution materials are included in the Board’s FY2017/18 Adopted Budget
ALTERNATIVES:
The Board could choose not to approve this resolution, however, that is not recommended as this item is consistent with Board policy. Further, this agenda item provides an opportunity to commemorate a major milestone for Travis Air Force Base and recognize its impact on Solano County.
