DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION:

The Department of Health and Social Services (H&SS) recommends the Board adopt and present a resolution recognizing May 2019 as Older Americans Month in Solano County.

SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:

Older Americans Month was established in 1963 as a vehicle for creating awareness of the contributions made by older adults and building community support for addressing their needs. The month-long observance continues to gain importance as the nation's, California's and Solano County's older adult population continues to grow. It provides an opportunity for communities, service providers and policymakers to reflect on both the contributions and needs of older residents. This year's theme is "Connect, Create and Contribute," and encourages seniors to maintain active lifestyles, stay engaged with family and friends; and share their life experiences, time and energy by serving in volunteer efforts that benefit others. Senior centers and numerous volunteer opportunities throughout Solano County provide support to help older residents reach these goals.

California's senior population is expected to increase by 87%, representing some four million people, by the year 2030 according to a report by the Public Policy Institute of California. In Solano County, where persons 65 years and older make up 16.7% (74,768) of the population today, that percentage is expected to increase to 22.3% (131.201) by 2030, according to population projections from the California Department of Finance. As the older population grows, it is important to both recognize their contributions and implement policies that help address their needs.
