DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION:

Supervisor Skip Thomson requests that the Board of Supervisors authorize the County's contribution of $500 from the General Fund contribution allocated to District 5 to benefit Solano Community College's Veterans Resource Center.

SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:

During the FY2018/19 Budget Hearings, the Board appropriated $5,000 to allow District 5 to support community service programs. District 5 recommends the distribution of the remaining funding as follows:

Solano Community College Veterans Resource Center ($500)

Solano Community College (SCC) is an approved educational institution by the California Department of Consumer Affairs Bureau for Private and Vocational Education, under Title 38, United States Code and Department of Defense. The SCC is also home to the Veterans Resource Center (VRC).

The VRC provides assistance to Veterans, Active-duty, Reservists, National Guard, and eligible dependents of Veterans and Active-duty in their pursuit of an education, obtaining their Veterans Education Benefits (including VA work-study), Department of Defense Tuition Assistance, and My Career Advancement Account Scholarship opportunities for military spouses. The VRC assists students with filing for benefits, counseling through their Veterans Counselor and Active-duty Counselor, as well as acting as the liaison between the Department of Veterans Affairs and students.

The SCC VRC serves 4 locations, including the Fairfield campus, Vacaville and Vallejo centers, as well as Travis Air Force Base. The VRC relies solely on community donations to fund events for the VRC. Funds will be used for the following:
