DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION:

The Sheriff recommends that the Board of Supervisors adopt and present a resolution and plaque of appreciation honoring Correctional Officer Jess Grapentine upon his retirement from the Sheriff's Office with over 28 years of dedicated public service to Solano County.

SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:

Jess Grapentine began his career with Solano County's Sheriff's Office as an Extra Help Correctional Officer on October 25, 1991; on May 10, 1992 he promoted to Correctional Officer (Entry); and on May 9, 1993 was promoted to Correctional Officer, whereby he served until his retirement. Officer Grapentine worked numerous positions within the Custody Division including, but not limited to, Commissary Officer, Visiting Officer, Protective Custody Officer, Minimum Security Officer, Custody Training Officer, and Inmate Programs Officer whereby he was thanked by the Sheriff's Criminal Justice Program Services Manager for his helpfulness to her staff and teachers while he was assigned to the inmate substance abuse treatment program.

Officer Grapentine was known for his ability to pay attention to detail, which served the department well, as on one occasion he noticed a personal bag that had been inadvertently left behind by a Chaplain and which was found to have contained a few screwdrivers. This bag went unnoticed by staff on two previous shifts.

Officer Grapentine was awarded a distinguished service medal in 2018 for saving the life of an inmate who was attempting suicide.
