DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION:
The Sheriff recommends that the Board of Supervisors adopt and present a resolution and plaque of appreciation honoring Correctional Officer Maria Grace Grapentine upon her retirement from the Sheriff’s Office with over 21 years of dedicated public service to Solano County.
SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:
Maria Grace Grapentine began her career with Solano County’s Sheriff’s Office as a Sheriff’s Services Technician on October 10, 1998; on January 9, 2000 she was promoted to Correctional Officer (Entry); and on January 9, 2001 was promoted to Correctional Officer, whereby she served until her retirement. Officer Grapentine worked numerous positions within the Custody Division including, but not limited to, Central Control, Medical Officer, Tower Officer, Roving Officer, Interpreter, and Custody Training Officer.
Officer Grapentine was named Correctional Officer of the Year in 2013 because of her outstanding qualities and overall job performance, best exemplified by her treatment of inmates. She assisted inmates who were unable to care for themselves with hygiene, provided interpretation assistance, used her sense of humor to provide encouragement, and worked to provide referrals to partner agencies and organizations, all while preserving safety and order within the facility by ensuring the inmates followed the rules.
Officer Grapentine was awarded a Purple Heart Medal in 2018 for sustaining a serious injury in 2017 from being thrown to the ground by an uncooperative inmate while conducting routine searches of the inmates’ cells.
Officer Grapentine was a highly respected and valued member of the Sheriff’s Office, an asset to any team she was part of, and will be greatly missed by her friends and co-workers. The resolution honors Maria Grace Grapentine for over 21 years of service and commends her dedication and public service to Solano County. Officer Grapentine’s official last date of employment with the Sheriff’s Office was October 31, 2019.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
The cost associated with preparing the agenda item is nominal and absorbed by the department’s FY2019/20 Adopted Budget. The costs associated with preparation and purchase of the resolution materials and plaque are included in the Board’s FY2019/20 Adopted Budget.
ALTERNATIVES:
The Board may elect not to award the resolution and plaque of appreciation; however, this is not recommended, as this is an opportunity to honor Correctional Officer Maria Grace Grapentine for her years of public service to the Sheriff’s Office and the citizens of Solano County.
