DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION:
Supervisor Vasquez requests that the Board adopt and present a resolution recognizing November 2019 as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome Awareness Month in Solano County.
SUMMARY/DISCUSSION:
Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, CRPS, formerly known as RSD, or Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, is a chronic neuro-inflammatory disorder. CRPS was recently designated as a rare disorder by the United States Food and Drug Administration and experts believe less than 200,000 people in the United States suffer from it, according to the Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome Association. Patients describe CRPS as a “burning,” “pins and needles” sensation, or as if someone were squeezing the affected limb. The pain may spread to the entire arm or leg, even though the injury might have only involved a finger or toe. The level of pain is measured as one of the most severe on the McGill University Pain Scale. CRPS awareness month is held in November and Solano County and others across the country have joined together to advocate for CRPS awareness, support and a better future through research, diagnosis, education and treatment.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
The costs associated with preparing the agenda item are nominal and absorbed by the District 4 FY2019/20 Adopted Budget. The costs associated with preparation and purchase of the resolution materials are included in the Board’s FY2019/20 Adopted Budget.
ALTERNATIVES:
The Board could choose not to adopt this resolution. This is not recommended because this is an opportunity to raise public awareness of a rare disorder that affects Solano County residents and others across the United States.
